The Chairman of the Ekiti State Universal Basic Education Board, Prof Femi Akinwumi has said that the adoption of the right methodology for the teaching of mathematics in schools would lead to greater understanding of the subject among students and forster improved performance of students in examinations.

The SUBEB Chairman made the assertion in Ado-Ekiti at the closing ceremony of a two week intensive training programme on Numeracy and Mental Arithmetics in Basic Education jointly organised by the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and National Mathematical Centre Abuja for selected mathematics teachers and students drawn from the three senatorial districts of the state.


He described mathematics as a major prerequisite for students to advance in their studies to the tertiary level .


The SUBEB said with the adoption of the right methodology for the teaching of the subject, pupils and students would have a better understanding of the subject and ensure that a greater percentage of them pass the subject in internal and examinations.


Akinwumi said the Administration of Dr Kayode Fayemi would continue to work in synergy with the Federal Ministry of Education, educational institutions and development partners in its quest to ensure that teachers in the state are exposed to the latest teaching methodologies at all times.


He commended the UBEC and the National Mathematical Centre Abuja for the initiative.
