The President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari has appointed the retiring Assistant Inspector General of Police, Garba Baba Umar, as a Senior Security Adviser on International Police Cooperation and Counter-terrorism in the office of the Minister of Police Affairs, All Nigeria Latest News reports.

President Buhari, in endorsing his appointment, acknowledged a precedent wherein a former Executive Member, AIG Kamal Subair (Retired), was retained in service by the Federal Government of Nigeria after retirement in 2018.

Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, revealed this information in a statement on Thursday.

President Buhari acknowledged AIG Umar’s contributions during his tenure on the Executive Committee, noting his assistance to Nigeria. With the expectation that he will continue to enhance crime scene equipment, border management, and counter-terrorism efforts in the remaining year, the President also expressed hope for increased representation of Nigerians in crucial positions within INTERPOL.

AIG Umar’s term at INTERPOL concludes in November 2024, while his newly appointed role as Senior Security Adviser becomes effective from the 16th of May, 2023.
