The National Union of Road Transport Workers on Saturday confirmed the arrest of its National President, Tajudeen Baruwa, and three other executives.
The union also confirmed the sealing off of its national secretariat located in Garki 2, Abuja.
It said the president and three other officials were arrested on the premises of the secretariat on Friday at 5pm when armed policemen and operatives of the Department of State Services invaded the building and asked all the occupants to leave.
The Deputy President of the union, Isa Ore, who confirmed the development while addressing journalists, said he was surprised by the development as the security agents did not give any reason for their action.
He said the union was preparing for the inauguration and swearing-in of the newly elected members of the National Administrative Council when the police arrived, ordered the workers to vacate and sealed off the premises.
“We were shocked to see the policemen in their numbers locking our secretariat without giving a reason. Today (Saturday), we were preparing for the inauguration and swearing-in of the newly elected National Administrative Council members but we just saw police and they asked us to leave the premises.
“They said it was an order from above and they have detained our president and other leaders at the Wuse Police Station. I have called the FCT Commissioner of Police but he said he was not in town,” Ore added.
He said others arrested and currently being detained at the Wuse Zone 3 Division were the General Secretary, Anthony Chukudi; National Trustee, Olayi Odion, and Principal Assistant Secretary, Abdulrasak Yemi.
