All Nigeria Latest News on Monday reported that Mr. Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) candidate in the 2023 presidential election, expressed that despite the Supreme Court’s October 26, 2023 verdict affirming President Bola Tinubu’s electoral victory, his vision for a new Nigeria remains steadfast.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, Obi emphasized that the court ruling has not deterred his commitment to his aspirations for the country.
While addressing his supporters popularly known as ‘Obidients’, Obi said a destination is not an event but a journey.
Although the the former governor of Anambra State, who addressed the media alongside Datti Baba-Ahmed, his running mate, did not explicitly disclose whether he would run for President again in 2027, Obi said the end has not come for his journey for a new Nigeria.
The 62 years old man appreciated “the energy and dedication of Nigerian youths and the Obidient movement”.
Obi said, “I want to assure them that this is not the end of our journey but in fact the beginning. Nigerians heard you, the world has taken note and we will not forget easily. We shall endure, persist until we reach our destination because new Nigeria is our destination. A destination is not an event.”
Obi and Atiku Abubakar from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), took their challenge against President Bola Tinubu’s victory in the last election all the way to the apex court. Their dissatisfaction began with the verdict of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT) in September. Unperturbed by the earlier decision, Atiku and Obi pursued the matter further and approached the Supreme Court. Their plea sought the nullification of Tinubu’s election, citing various grounds such as double nomination, alleged certificate forgery, non-transmission of results electronically, and the claim of insufficient votes (25%) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), among other issues.
Despite the meticulous efforts and legal arguments put forth by Atiku and Obi, the Supreme Court ultimately affirmed Tinubu’s electoral victory on February 25, 2023. The apex court’s decision marked the culmination of a rigorous legal battle that spanned from the initial challenge at the PEPT to the highest judicial authority in the country. The outcome solidified Tinubu’s position as the elected president and brought an end to the legal contestation initiated by Obi and Atiku.
