On Thursday, Team manager Seun Betiku, along with other club officials and players, sustained injuries in an attack by gunmen on the vehicle of Sunshine Stars Football Club of Akure, All Nigeria Latest News reports.
A ball boy from the club was also shot during the attack.
The attack occurred on the Benin-Ore highway while the team was en route to Benin for a Nigeria Premier Football League match day 13 fixture against Bendel Insurance of Benin.
In a statement issued in Akure on Thursday, the Media Officer of Sunshine Stars Football FC, Michael Akintunde confirmed the attack by gunmen.
He confirmed that those injured in the attack have been hospitalized. Additionally, he stated that the ball boy was shot, and the Team Manager, Seun Betiku, along with other club officials, who sustained injuries, have been taken to a nearby hospital.
“It’s saddened our heart to inform Nigerians, especially football lovers that out team was attacked few minutes ago along Ore-Benin Expressway to honour an a tie, against Insurance of Benin, scheduled for this weekend.
“Our ball boy was shot in the horrible attack, our team manager and other club officials including players are seriously injured.
“It took the intervention of officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps that helped rescue the injured officials and the shot individual to a nearby hospital.
“We hope you join us in prayers,” the statement concluded,” he said.
