The crisis in the Rivers State House of Assembly escalated on Monday as twenty-seven members defected from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The lawmakers pointed to internal divisions within the PDP as the main factor influencing their decision to switch to the APC.

All Nigeria Latest News reports that the lawmakers who defected are reportedly loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

The lawmakers convened for a plenary session around 8 am on Monday, during which the decision to defect was made. The session took place amid heightened security measures at the entrance of the Assembly complex along Moscow Road in Port Harcourt.

In a related development, Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has called for an emergency executive council meeting.

On October 27, 2023, the 4th executive council meeting took place, during which the council granted approval to four draft bills.
